FROM ROOFTOP COCKTAILS TO COASTAL ITALIAN FARE,THE KIMPTON SHOREBREAK FORT LAUDERDALE BEACH RESORT HAS IT ALL, PROVING YOU DON’T HAVE TO TRAVEL FAR TO FEEL FAR AWAY.

There’s something about checking into a hotel in or near your own city that makes you feel like you’ve outsmarted the system. Especially when the hotel in question is the Kimpton Shorebreak Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort—a mid-century marvel hidden just off the main drag, where palm-lined walkways and rooftop cocktails replace the chaos of a TSA line. For South Florida locals looking for a reset without the rebooking fee, Shorebreak might be the ultimate home- away-from-home.

Originally opened in 1949, the property was the first in Fort Lauderdale Beach to have a pool just steps from the ocean. Today, its reimagined 96-room footprint feels more Palm Springs than party strip, with a low-slung silhouette, lush tropical landscaping, and two pools tucked beneath the palms. The renovation is thoughtful—never flashy. It honors its mid-century roots without leaning too hard into theme. The vibe? Grown-up but not stiff, and definitely designed for lingering.

For me, the fun begins upstairs at Escape Rooftop Bar, where the panoramic views of the Intracoastal are enough to make you consider canceling all afternoon plans. The west- facing rooftop is built for golden hour—shaded loungers, craft cocktails, and a playlist that’s heavy on disco edits and low on pretense. The new cocktail menu is a tropical dream (think: cucumber and basil, passionfruit and vanilla), and the tapas-style lunch keeps things relaxed and flavorful. A standout? The porchetta panini with garlic aioli and house giardiniera, best enjoyed poolside with a chilled rosé in hand.
If you time it right, you’ll catch Sunset Hour, a Shorebreak specialty that brackets the golden moment with its own celebratory cocktail and wine specials. On weekends, a DJ spins laidback sets from 2 to 6 p.m., creating the kind of laidback scene that’s somehow both social and serene.

As the sun starts to dip, the energy shifts. It’s the perfect moment to head downstairs to La Fuga, the resort’s signature restaurant. The space is moody and warm, with oversized booths, a gleaming bar, and a live jazz trio Thursday through Saturday that somehow makes your second negroni feel like a cultural experience. Executive Chef Michael Mayer’s menu is coastal Italian done right— fresh, seasonal, and deeply satisfying without being fussy. The grilled octopus with pancetta and cannellini beans is a standout, as is the risotto Cacio e Pepe finished with a rich Barolo reduction and tender oxtail. For something indulgent and shareable, the bone-in veal chop crusted in parmesan and topped with lemon-caper butter is peak “treat yourself” energy.

The cocktail program here deserves its own mention. Inventive yet elegant, it balances technique (clarified Cosmopolitans and duck fat–washed rye) with approachability. Even a La Fuga Martini feels elevated, thanks to Crème de Pêche and a Lillet Blanc rinse. It’s the kind of bar where you’ll want to linger, order that second round, and maybe split a dessert or two.

Mornings at Shorebreak are blissfully quiet. Breakfast is served daily at La Fuga from 7 to 11 a.m., and if you’re feeling especially ambitious (or recovering from said veal chop), beachside yoga is offered daily. Whether you’re marking a milestone or simply in need of a midweek mood boost, Kimpton Shorebreak makes it easy to romanticize your own backyard. Here, the luxury isn’t just in the linens or the libations—it’s in the unhurried mornings, the warm hellos, and the feeling that you’ve discovered something special just minutes from home.
